Portishead Christmas Light Switch On
Portishead Christmas Light represents a remarkable example of a community coming together – every year around 100 volunteers work together to put up a festive display widely regarded as the ‘best in the west’! Father Christmas has kindly agreed to support the switch-on ceremony on 25th November, with his helpers replying to letters sent in by children, provided there is a return address. Father Christmas, escorted by members of the emergency services, will arrive at the podium in the High Street near the Old Mill at 6.15pm. Master of ceremonies for the switch on will be Jemma Cooper of the BBC. A professional firework display will mark the actual switch on at 6.30pm, sponsored again by Future Bathrooms.
The honour of switching on the Portishead Christmas lights has been awarded to “Marathon Man” and anti-bullying campaigner Ben Smith. Ben made the national press for his amazing feat of having run 401 marathons in 401 days! Come along for a wonderful festive evening.

Portishead Films showcases ‘Green Book’
Portishead Film will be screening ‘Green Book,’ a road movie which is set in America in the early sixties and won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2019.
When Tony Lip, a bouncer from an Italian-American neighbourhood in the Bronx, is hired to drive Dr. Don Shirley, a world-class Black pianist, on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South, they must rely on ‘The Green Book’ to guide them to the few establishments which are safe for African-Americans. Confronted with racism and danger, as well as unexpected humanity and humour, they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive on the journey of a lifetime. It’s essentially about two racially diverse men who get to know each other and are thus saved from their own shortcomings.
Moving and poignant, funny and delightful, Green Book offers a story about belonging and working out who you are, that will warm the hardest of hearts.
Green Book will be screened on Friday 6th December at the Jubilee Hall, Slade Road, Portishead. The film starts at 8.00pm (with refreshments available from 7.30) and tickets cost £5.00. All are most welcome.
